Bicentenary Pipeband Championship

noon Grammar School marching down Sinclair StreetIn 2001, the year of Helensburgh’s Bi-Centenary several local groups were asked to organise an event which would meet the criteria for the Bi-Centenary grant monies provided by Argyll & Bute Council and for that event to continue in the years after the Bi-centenary.

Among the events which took place was the pipe band competition which is now the only one that has continued each year since the bi-centenary.

Major E Wallace (Ret), Chairperson CH Campbell, M&D Judge D Crockett and Chieftain Col. DG Ross, OBEThe event has developed and grown over the years and now has approximately 30 pipe band performances and between 100-200 highland dancers each year.

In 2009 the event was elevated to championship status and is now known as the Bicentenary Pipeband Championships.

Col Ross with his dog'I am honoured to have been invited to be the Chieftain of the 2012 Helensburgh Bicentenary Pipe Band Championships.

Having spent my early years in this area and, after retiring from the regular Army, returning here, it is a tremendous pleasure to be part of such an important event in the piping calendar.

I give my warmest thanks and congratulations to the organisers for the enormous amount of work they have given without which today's Championships could not have happened.
